PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

A Cornville man is accused of throwing a puppy from a car traveling 50 mph on an Arizona roadway with his 8-month-old baby inside, Prescott police said.

Joseph Kennedy, 27, was apparently distraught after fighting with his girlfriend on June 11, the day of the incident, officers said.

When asked why he threw the puppy from the vehicle, he said he "didn't care for the animal," according to police.

Kennedy was arrested Monday by a Yavapai County sheriff's deputy, who spotted him in the back of a truck stopped in a Cottonwood convenience store parking lot.

As the truck began moving, Kennedy ducked down into the bed hoping the deputy would not see him, but it was too late, YCSO said. Kennedy was handcuffed and booked at the Camp Verde Detention on two felony counts of cruelty to animals and possession of dangerous drugs and paraphernalia.

Police said they found he was in possession of methamphetamine and associated paraphernalia.

The puppy was treated at a local emergency veterinarian clinic. The animal suffered significant neurological issues, police said.

After he was arrested, Kennedy refused to divulge where sheriff's deputies could find his son for a welfare check.

Authorities eventually located the infant with a babysitter in Cottonwood. Child Protective Services were notified and took custody of the baby.

Kennedy remains in custody on a $17,500 bond.

YCSO animal control officers monitored the care and follow-up given to the puppy and report she is now doing well in a foster home.
