WASHINGTON - A Purcellville woman was flabbergasted when, after receiving a $2 bill as change on the Dulles Toll Road, the toll attendant on her way back wouldn't accept the same bill.

Kathy Shaughnessy didn't think twice when she was given a $2 bill as change on the Dulles Toll Road on her way to work in Alexandria. Driving back home, she pulled out the bill to hand to the toll attendant.

"At first she wouldn't even touch it. It was like I was handing her a tarantula or something. She backed away. She said, 'Oh no, I can't take it.' And I said, 'What you do you mean? It's U.S. currency," Shaughnessy says of the exchange.

The attendant told Shaughnessy they never should have taken the bill in the first place, but finally she accepted it, claiming she'd have to pay Shaughnessy's toll out of her own pocket.

"After I paid, the little light was still red. I stopped and said, 'It's not green.' And she said, 'It's okay, you can go.' The light didn't ring ... so I'm hoping it didn't take a picture and didn't think I didn't pay," she says.

It turns out there never should have been a problem. Toll attendants along the Dulles Toll Road accept all legal tender including $2 bills and 50-cent pieces.

"Obviously it was a mistake. The $2 bill should have been collected," says Chris Paolino with The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority which oversees the operation of the Dulles Toll Road.

Shaughnessy filed a complaint online which went right to the toll manager who flagged her case to ensure she didn't get a ticket, Paolino says.

"We're working to make sure situations like this don't happen again," Paolino says.

:umno:

They are still being printed for circulation. You can go down to your local bank and get them all day long, although not every branch will have them, but I do it every now and then just to spend them and put them back into circulation because it's fun to fuck with people with them. They are worth exactly $2....unless of course you get your hands on some old ones or rare ones.

1976-Present

In April, 1976, the Treasury Department reintroduced the $2 bill as a cost-saving measure. Series 1976 $2 bills were redesigned and issued as a Federal Reserve Note. The obverse design remains basically unchanged since 1929 and features the same portrait of Jefferson. A green treasury seal and serial numbers replace the red used on the previous United States Notes. Since the reissue of the bill coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial themed design on the reverse. An engraved rendition of John Trumbull's The Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. First day issues of the new $2 bills could be taken to a post office and stamped with the date "APR 13 1976". In all, 590,720,000 notes from Series 1976 were printed.

In 1996 and 1997, 153,600,000 bills were printed as Series 1995 for the Federal Reserve District of Atlanta. In 2004, 121,600,000 of the Series 2003 bills were printed for the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all 12 Federal Reserve Banks. In all, 220,800,000 notes were printed.

In February 2012, the B.E.P. printed 512,000 Series 2009 $2 Star Notes, in anticipation of more regular runs being printed later in 2012. Series 2009 $2 bills were issued to banks during the summer of 2012.

In November 2013, the B.E.P. began printing a Series 2013 $2 bill for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; these notes bear the signature of Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and entered circulation in early 2014. A total of 44,800,000 notes were ordered for fiscal year 2014, which runs from October 2013 through September 2014.

We've got 10k in 2's in our vault. We have one customer who gets $1000 worth at a time. He likes to use them when tipping just to be different.

As you can see, it's a fairly complex coin to produce. (gold within silver)

They claim they will last longer than the paper currency, which is correct...other than the initial batch where the centers popped out and had to be redone

I have a bunch of $2 bills. It's true you don't see them in general circulation very often, but if you ask for them at the bank, they'll definitely give them to you.

I liked our 2 dollar bills...they were kind of an orange color compared to the basic green/blue of our other currencies...

oh there was indeedy...something about the cost

It was strange when we first got the loonies and toonies...you'd kinda write them off as normal change, thinking you had a little bit of shrapnel in your pocket....then you'd empty them out later and find you have 22 bucks
