Lorde's Sydney fans were left disappointed on Wednesday when the pop princess avoided a meet and greet at the airport, instead being escorted in a private car off the tarmac.

A source told The Daily Mail Australia that upon landing in Sydney, Police waited air side at the gate to make sure the 20-strong group of fans didn't get out of hand.

'When she arrived in Sydney she didn’t have to meet and greet her fans at the airport, she was taken off the tarmac,' the source said.

'In the same way Angelina Jolie was escorted from the plane with her children when she came here to film recently. A car was waiting for her a short distance from the plane... Lorde did not speak or meet with anyone – she was whisked away in a people carrier.'

One fan waiting at the airport tweeted her disappointment, saying: 'To those wanting to get photo/signatures from Lorde at the airport Ella's manager spoke to us saying she will not be taking photos etc.'

It's been a drama filled Australian tour for Lorde, who first postponed her trip Down Under in April after a serious chest infection.

Then just four songs into her set at her Perth concert on Saturday night, the Royals singer was forced to leave the stage due to a mysterious illness.

Her real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor, Lorde wraps shows in Sydney this week followed by Melbourne, Newcastle and Brisbane.
