LOS ANGELES — A woman who accused Bright Eyes singer Conor Oberst of raping her when she was a teenager a decade ago now says she made the story up.

Joan Faircloth sent a notarized statement to Oberst’s lawyer Monday recanting what she wrote online starting last December.

“The statements I made and repeated online and elsewhere over the past six months accusing Conor Oberst of raping me are 100% false,” the Durham, North Carolina, woman wrote. “I made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life and trying to cope with my son’s illness.”

The allegations were “republished by countless media outlets around the world, thus further perpetuating the untrue depiction of Oberst as a rapist,” said a defamation lawsuit filed by Oberst against Faircloth in February. “To add insult to injury, certain media outlets published stories in which Faircloth’s defamatory false statements were characterized as true, and in which Oberst’s fans were actually encouraged to stop supporting his musical career.”

Court records show that Faircloth never responded to Oberst’s lawsuit, which called her a “pathological liar” and asked for at least $1 million in damages. A judge issued a default judgment in Oberst’s favor earlier this month.

Faircloth’s story was first published in December on the website OXJane.com under the title “It Happened to Me: I Dated a Famous Rock Star & All I Got Was Punched in the Face,” the lawsuit said. Faircloth wrote that Oberst “took advantage of my teenage crush on him” when she was introduced to him at a concert when she was 16 and he was in his 20s. She wrote that ” Conor took a lot from me including my virginity, my dignity and self esteem.”

Faircloth later published statements saying that the singer’s attorneys offered her “hush money” to keep quiet about the rape.

Her statement on Monday recanted all of her claims. “I publicly retract my statements about Conor Oberst, and sincerely apologize to him, his family, and his fans for writing such awful things about him,” Faircloth wrote. “I realize that my actions were wrong and could undermine the claims of actual sexual assault victims and for that I also apologize. I’m truly sorry for all the pain that I caused.”

Oberst, 34, is described by Rolling Stone as “a pain-strumming poet of emo.” His group Bright Eyes first found success in 2002 with the album “Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground.”

"Court records show that Faircloth never responded to Oberst’s lawsuit, which called her a “pathological liar” and asked for at least $1 million in damages."

This is what I don't like. She's allowed to make her fictitious claims, possibly ruining a man's life and then when legal entities become involved she ignores that and issues a 'heartfelt' 10 year old apology.

They should take every dime from this woman and garnishee her wages until she dies. Examples have to be made.

Plus there will be plenty of people who heard the rape allegations, but not the recant

it's the only allegation that unproven, can ruin a person's life..

Whats your estimate on the ones that go unreported?

Whats your estimate on the ones that go unreported?

First, that estimate was based off RAINN's estimate of sexual assault and a research driven estimate of a 6% false reporting rate. I am sure the accused would say it's much higher and definitions matter.

Research on under-reporting says 50% - 90%. The problem with any of this is, again, definitions of "rape" and "sexual assault". Example: If the person says no, but the aggressor tries again, gets no response, and completes the sex act, many would call that rape. Probably the largest sticking point is when a female claims she couldn't consent because she was drinking, but the male was drinking also. Drunk guy is the aggressor, drunk girl goes along without protest... did she consent?

Two studies had the male admission-of-a-sexual-cause at 32% and 5%. Men may seek treatment but deny that there was a sexual assault component. So, it's all over the board. In some locations, because rape is defined as a male penetrating a female without consent, so female perps are charged with non-sexual aggravated assaults. So those don't go into the statistical base.

It's suggested that the vast majority of child sexual victimization goes unreported, but again... hard to say. It's just hard to prove the negative.

I have seen statistics that say 99% of rape is by men. I have also seen statistics that show sexual assault is equally distributed between male and female perps.

That's the long answer.

The short answer is I don't think anyone knows and it depends on how you define it. But, you wanted my estimate. So I will say 80,000, which represents about one third by the broad definition of sexual assault.

Yes. Agreed.

At the same time, don't blindly accept the hype. Unfortunately, there is a political agenda attached to most of this, which makes the real issue get buried in bullshit.

Shouldn't she be charged with something, slander or defamation at the very least

That's what I was thinking ....libel and slander, defamation of character. Perjury...she could be getting over a decade in jail if they do the math
