LINDEN — A man seeking help with a locked car door, saying he was locked out of a vehicle that belonged to a relative, was arrested for car theft.

Quamier Claiborne, 20, of Roselle, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. today on the 1800 block of Orchard Terrace and charged with receiving stolen property and attempted burglary of a vehicle, police Capt. James Sarnicki said.

He said two officers were on patrol when a resident flagged them down at 1:05 a.m. and explained that a man had just approached him and asked for a coat hanger because he was locked out of his car.

The officers found the man, later identified as Claiborne, standing near a 2009 Volkswagen Passat, Sarnicki said. He said Claiborne claimed he had borrowed the car from his aunt.

Officers discovered the Passat was reported stolen out of Roselle, and arrested Claiborne. He also was charged with possession of burglary tools because he was carrying a pair of pruning shears in his pocket.

Claiborne was being held this morning at Linden Police Headquarters.
