As children, we are often urged to eat our veggies. But it’s a plea that appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

Millions grow up without having tried a host of basic foods such as turnips and sprouts, a study suggests.

One in ten adults have never tried vegetables such as leek, celery and kale.

Common cheeses were avoided by one in four people, while more than four in 10 had never tried meats such as goose and venison.

‘It’s surprising to see that many staple foods are regularly avoided or haven’t been tried,’ said a spokesman for vitamin supplier Seven Seas, which is behind the poll of 2,000 adults. ‘It’s hard to keep track and manage our diets day to day to ensure we’re setting ourselves up well.

‘But there is clearly a worrying trend of people avoiding many of the foods that can be of great benefit to health and well-being.’

Fussy eating and the lack of key foods in the average diet is leading to serious deficiencies in Omega-3, which aids the immune system, according to Seven Seas.

One in three parents were also worried that they and their children were missing out on nutrients because of limited diets.

haddock is a white fish, rather light, similar to cod or sole but a bit more dense....some fishyness but not too much. mostly a north atlantic fish so that's probably why you havent seen it, there's better stuff to be had on the west coast. (just hopefully non irradiated)

Had 25 of the items on the list. Most of them I'd eat again, or still do. Seafood is a no-no for me now though. One too many times I've gotten sick or had an allergic reaction, so, I just don't eat it anymore. The exception is if I catch the fish and cook it myself.

1, 8 and 28 are the only ones I've not tried. Mostly because those or not readily available to me. And the restaurants that serve those things are way out of my league. Like most restaurants anyway...eating out in Finland is expensive as shiieet.

I've never had fresh oysters, just a whole bunch lined up in a tin covered in greasy oil...ate them quite often with crackers :yumyum:

of course I was an alcoholic at the time so that may explain the novelty
