While the TV show's original run ended in 1968 after just three seasons, Batman has lived on in the hearts of countless fans over the decades, thanks to endless re-runs.

And so it was a show-stopping affair when former co-stars Adam West, 85, and Burt Ward, 69, reunited at Comic-Con in San Diego, California, for the DVD release of their cult series.

A bespectacled Adam, who played the show's titular character, appeared as though the years had been kind to him as posed for photographs in a striped shirt and jeans.

Jovial Burt opted for a shirt with vertical stripes as he greeted fans and the press, showing off a more portly figure than the one he regularly squeezed into tights as Batman's sidekick, Robin.

Adam and Burt were joined by Julie Newmar, who portrayed Catwoman on the show.

The 80-year-old actress proved she's still very much the glamourpuss when she stepped out in a cream suit with a plunging neckline.

The trio chatted at a packed press conference and also stood together as they posed with their trophies, after being honoured with Comic-Con International's Inkpot Award.

Staying in full character mode, Adam excitedly tweeted as he prepared to make his way to San DIego for the annual event.

'Batmobile headed for Comic-Con International. Will these hot wheels get me there? #comicon2014,' he wrote.

While Adam is proud of his work on the iconic show, he has admitted that the legacy was something of a battle to escape once its initial run had ended.

He told USA Today: 'When you run around in a funny costume and fight crime 24/7, some old-guard producers think, "That's just natural and that's what he does always." But they're forgetting that now.'

The actor, who lends his distinctive voice to the hit animated show Family Guy, also has memories of costume challenges, which he is sure Ben Affleck will face as plays Batman in an upcoming film.

'The costume was uncomfortable. The cowl was very tight and I couldn't see down and around, but you deal with those things. They paid me well,' he said.

'You make the costume work for you. Ben Affleck, if you're (reading), make the costume work for you!'

Batman: The Complete Television Series is scheduled for release on November 11.
