WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WFSB) -

The Willimantic Police Department arrested a man on Saturday after he fell asleep with food on the stove with his young daughter in the house.

The fire department responded to a fire alarm at an apartment complex on Valley St. at about 7 p.m. and found smoke coming out of an apartment window.

When crews looked inside, they saw a young girl trying to wake someone up on the couch, according to police.

Willimantic firefighters tried to open the door, but it was locked. They forced entry into the apartment and found Christopher Adams, 29, asleep on the couch.

There was food smoking on the stove in the apartment and the smoke alarm was going off. According to police, it took firefighters several attempts to wake up Adams and he appeared to be intoxicated.

"On the surface, Adams appeared to be caring for his daughter by making her dinner, but a decision to mix intoxicants with child care almost cost him much more than burnt food," Corporal Charles Miller said. "We're grateful for the expedited response by the Fire Department, and are committed to protecting our city's youngest residents."

The young girl in the apartment was later identified as Adam's 5-year-old daughter. His daughter was unharmed during the incident and a family member came to take care of her.

Willimantic police arrested Adams for risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment. He is being held on a $20,000 bond and will appear in court on Monday.
