Police received notice that a car had careened into a ditch on Tannilantie, in Yli-Ii, at 9:30 on Thursday evening. Upon their arrival at the site of the accident, a 34-year-old man was breathalysed by police.
The result was a staggering Blood Alcohol Concentration level (BAC) of 9.0 promille (mg per ml of blood). The legal limit for driving in Finland is 0.5 promille. The man had reportedly taken a swig from a bottle of heavy spirits moments before being tested, which partly accounts for the incredibly high reading.
The breath test was subsequently re-taken, with the second reading registering a still shockingly high BAC of 3.2. The police then took the driver for a blood test to more accurately determine his blood alcohol content.
Charges of aggravated drunk driving, compromising road safety, as well as driving without a valid license are levelled at the suspect.
The same driver has already been arrested five times this summer for drunk driving.
