This is beyond stupid. Even if this were a good teaching tool, which it is not, he needs to first explain the technique he's going to use. Instead of explaining that he's going to tell a story to serve as a memory aid, he jumps right into the story. All he does is confuse the listener, which is a very bad thing to do when you're trying to teach.

Not "deconstruct the 9 to be 10, and find its best friend 6 but make that a 5 because we don't want to be racist and then add those two together, but not to violently because that might be considered number rape". I thought about this a lot last night, and out side of her dumb ass drawing and description, I have to say I kind of do math in that fashion in my head. But, she is supposed to be teaching 2nd graders Im guessing, and she is just causing confusion

It's stupid to be teaching them like this, all they need to do is memorize it, not all this deconstruction bullshit. It makes a simple math problem more difficult. Look, this is how they were teaching my g/f's daughter multiplication last year in the 4th grade. These are Common Core worksheets:

That's not that bad. Not nearly as bad as the videos. I can see what they're doing, I just don't see a reason for it. Even if you don't "get" multiplication, you're still using multiplication in that process. It's not addressing the problem, it's just making it more complicated.

I thought the point of common core was to help those that just couldn't get it. It's not working.

I wish we'd go back to the way kids were taught in the earlier parts of the 1900s. Those kids grew up to be geniuses compared to the people today.

I do simple math all day long at my job, rarely use a calculator...I tend to take portions, multiply or divide or whatever and construct the total in my head....but will still write down 4096 x 48 in a vertical column like you've done on another post...and I write it by hand on a box or paper, rather than go to my desk for a calculator...drives my coworkers nuts :lol:
