View Full Version : Started my AR15 build.

Griffin
08-20-2014, 03:22 AM
I started with an 80% lower from AR15 Brick (http://www.ar15brick.com/index.php/80-tdp-ar15-lower-receiver-forged-anodized-blem.html), a Machining Jig (http:http://www.ebay.com/itm/AR-15-80-Machining-Jig-for-drill-press-/181499911958?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a423cdf16//) and my Rikon radial arm drill press (http://http://www.rikontools.com/productpage_30-140.html).

For those unfamiliar, the lower receiver of an AR15 is the serial numbered part that has to be registered.
By using an unfinished lower and milling it out myself, I can legally build and own an unregistered Rifle. 8-)

I just got the last of my tools in and set up my drilling jig. Tomorrow I will finish drilling and move on to the milling process. Hopefully I will have the lower complete by this weekend. I already have a P-TAC BLACKHAWK lower parts kit (http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/15213/category/389/) with a mil spec buffer assembly and am ordering a GL MAG buttstock (httphttp://www.fab-defense.com/en/category-magazines-and-accessories/id-272/m4-survival-buttstock-w-built-in-mag-carrier.html://) for it.

Still trying to decide which upper receiver to go with. I'm leaning toward a flat top with a mid length H barrel and probably a Magpul MOE handguard.

thats why I asked the question , so why do people have to go down this route to own an AR15?

Teh One Who Knocks
08-20-2014, 04:16 PM
Because an AR-15 is a highly customizable rifle and by doing your own build, you can make it the way you want to make it instead of buying one that is 'stock' from the manufacturer. It's no different than anything else that people choose to custom build.

Couple of things.

1.)Know that you can never sell this rifle or take it out of state. You will instantly violate interstate commerce laws. Committing a class A felony.

2.)Don't cheap on roll pin punches, and don't use normal punches for roll pins.

http://www.amazon.com/shops/A3RNIK5KD9N594/ref=aag_m_ss

If you order them in a set, it costs 60$, but if you order them separately in the same order from buzzard gulch, you can get #1-5 for 23$. Mayhew is the brand to get. roll/pilot punch. Same thing.

3.) Get the full auto profile bolt carrier group. It's legal to own, and lessens felt recoil significantly. Nickle Boron finished ones are amazing. Can clean with a rag.

5.) When you put the barrel on, grease the threads on the receiver before putting the barrel nut on, or it will heat weld itself on from firing.*It's a pain in the ass to get off once it happens*

I'll add more as my brain functions a little better.

1.)Know that you can never sell this rifle or take it out of state.

Believe me, I researched this and read the 1968 BATF ruling before starting. The company I ordered the receiver from has a Determination Letter from the BATF stating they are in compliance.

I bought the jig already machined, it was just waiting for the lower to be sandwiched in.

Cool thing about the lower I went with, the rear take down pocket was already there. I didn't have to worry about buffer area clearance.

Something like this. http://www.surplusammo.com/saa-5-56-18-hbar-1-7-mid-length-moe-cnb-bcg-dragons-head-complete-upper-receiver-magpul-moe-handguard/
Then some flip up irons.

If you do a railed gas block, know that it won't fit under most free float handguards, but most of all, know you have to use some form of metal back up iron sight. You cannot use the magpul ones, as they will melt.

This is a clear anodized lower from Milzap (http://www.milzap.com/).
I chose this one because it had a S/N space that I had my birthday engraved into. This will be a pistol build initially with the option of becoming a registered SBR (short barreled rifle), thus the designated lower identification.
The buffer tube is extended length and made to fit the sig stabilizer, but I doubt I will get one. That $130.00 will go toward the tax stamp.

Finished the pistol lower. I don't have an upper yet so I put the rifle upper on for test fit and function.
The extended length buffer tube and paracord wrap help for a better cheek weld, although I'm sure my turks head knot will not win any prizes. I also put a rubber furniture tip on the butt for comfort.

Roland's story repeats, but each time it starts over, something small changes for the better. That's the point of the Horn appearing, it shows there's a change for the better. He left the Horn behind when Cuthbert died in the first iteration. Roland's in a purgatory of sorts, but he's moving forward towards redemption. There's a sin that he's atoning for, but I can't remember what it is. Eventually, things will end in Roland's favor.

Now this is what really bakes your mind: Was this Roland's first iteration, or his 1000th?

Recoil is barely felt.
Since it is built as a pistol I can't put a stock on but the buffer tube is longer than usual.
With the rubber tip resting on my collar bone I still get a decent cheek weld with the cord wrap on the tube and manageable muzzle jump.

It's paracord wrapped around the buffer tube. The barrel is only 11.5" so legally it is considered a pistol and can't have a stock on it.
