A chef preparing a dish from cobra flesh died when the snake's head bit him - 20 minutes AFTER it was cut off.

Victim Peng Fan had been preparing a special dish made from the Indochinese spitting cobra, a rare delicacy in Asia where eating snakes is commonplace.

But when he went to throw the serpent's severed head into the waste bin, it bit him - injecting him with its fast acting venom.

Police say Mr Peng died before he could be given life saving anti-venom in hospital.

Diners who were eating in the restaurant at the time have described screams coming from the kitchen as the tragedy unfolded.

Restaurant guest Lin Sun, 44, who was in the restaurant with his wife Su at the time said: "We were in the restaurant having a meal for my wife's birthday when suddenly there was a lot of commotion.

"We did not know what was happening but could hear screams coming from the kitchen.

"There were calls for a doctor in the restaurant but unfortunately by the time medical assistance arrived the man had already died. After we heard that we did not continue with our meal."

A police spokesman said: "It is a highly unusual case but it appears to be just an accident. He prepared the snake himself and was just unlucky.

"There was nothing that could be done to save the man. Only the anti-venom could have helped but this was not given in time. It was just a tragic accident."

The snake was being diced up to be made into snake soup, which is a delicacy in the area and a much sought after dish in high-end restaurants. China has seen a rising demand for snake products, not only in restaurants but also for use in traditional medicine.

Snake expert Yang Hong-Chang - who has spent 40 years studying cobras - says all reptiles can function for up to an hour after losing body parts, or even their entire body.

The video above shows another chef removing the head of a similar snake as he prepares to cook it, removing the head first. Both the head and the body can clearly be seen to move after they are severed.

Mr Yang said: "It is perfectly possible that the head remained alive and bit Peng's hand. By the time a snake has lost its head, it’s effectively dead as basic body functions have ceased, but there is still some reflexive action.

"It means snakes have the capability of biting and injecting venom even after the head has been severed."

The Indochinese spitting cobra - or Naja siamensis - is also known as the Thai or black and white spitting cobra.

It's found in south east Asian countries including Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam.

Adults average 3ft to 3.9ft long but can reach a maximum of 5ft, and are found in lowlands, hills, plains, woodland and jungle. It mainly feeds on rodents, toads, and other snakes.

Primarily nocturnal, it is more likely to flee when threatened during daylight. At night it becomes more aggressive, display its hood and spit out venom.

Death is caused by paralysis and consequent asphyxiation, but even if the snake only spits venom in a victim's eyes they can be permanently blinded.

Mr Peng was from Shunde, a district in the city of Foshan in southern China's Guangdong province. Residents of the province have a long history of enjoying snake meats of all sorts in local culinary dishes.

For many centuries it has been commonly served up in a soup, and is also taken as part of Chinese medicine, for it is believed that snake meat can cure ailments.

It's part of a 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' concept - the more poisonous the delicacy, the more beneficial it is seen as being to the body.

One local said: "Snake meat is really good for us. It is not so easy to get and is expensive but it has spectacular health benefits.

"I have never heard any cases of a dead snake killing anyone, especially not in the kitchen."

I was watching early seasons of Survivor and they were on an island with Yellow Crates....one doofus was playing with/taunting one and then picked up the snake and threw it in the ocean....5 hours from the time you get bit until death if not treated. And this guy is in bumfuck Borneo, on an island

they do have medical personal there, you're correct. Typically they are in camps on other islands....but first you have to alert someone, then they have to get to where you are....

if doh-head gets bit, then thinks it's nothing and wanders off...maybe washing the wound in the ocean...he's done

There's been lots of people medivaced through the seasons....they run challenges like obstacle courses and pulling canons through jungles...they swim in shark, crocodile and jellyfish infested waters....and their water supplies are tainted with bacteria so every drop has to be boiled before they drink or cook with it....not as easy as it looks...

one dude fell down in a wooded area, his knee got cut, the thing got infected and they had to pull him from the show for fear of losing his leg...it's not mild...

one Survivor example for boneheads who think it's easy or rigged...

Survivor Guatemala took place in a jungle. They gathered the 18 people together at one area, split them into two groups and gave each a map and a compass. Both tribes had to hike 11 miles to their respective camps through thick jungle. Both tribes got lost and had to overnight in the jungle. No food, no water, no machete...just the compass.

Next day they find their camps and 4 of the beefiest, buff guys are puking, almost passing out and cramping up so bad from dehydration that they can't move.....it was 110F that day. That was the first 'challenge'....get to your home camp.

One tribe had a bag of corn, a pot and a machete. They had to find rocks to smash/grind the corn kernels, find water to make it into paste...then try to get a fire lit with no matches or lighter. So they couldn't manage it and didn't end up drinking or eating for the first 3 days, in over 100 degree temps in the jungle.

First actual challenge between tribes it reached 114F and they were playing a type of contact basketball game, on a raised cargo net thingy  It was brutal....they couldn't even spit because of no water or food...

Survivor Guatemala is on Youtube I believe, something like 14 episodes and then the final. Watch the first 2 or 3 while you're having a beer and corn chips  It's amazing what they put the contestants through....you can actually see people losing 20 to 30 pounds over 21 days or so...

the real fun of Survivor if you're interested Goof is the psychological aspect of what the producers put the players through...

the survival stuff can get pretty bad, but the draw for me anyways, is watching 16 or 18 people degenerate from working together to live and survive, to becoming animals and showing their true colors to get what they want

ffs...on about day 21 if the host comes out with a hamburger and coke, people start agreeing to do anything just to have a bite

I know the premise mate, just not a big fan of reality tv! My take on it - a bunch of fame hungry wankers sign up for something......... and that's me done, i'm not gonna help them become famous  I watched the original series of Big Brother...... it was mildly entertaining probably because it was new....... and that's about it for me. I've caught the odd few minutes of various reality shows over the years and they just bore me  I watch tv for un-realism
