Sunday, during the MTV Video Music Awards, an Ivy League professor used Ariana Grande’s award for Best Pop Video as a platform to accuse MTV of racism.
“First they shootin us in the streets, and then they taking all the video awards for sorry songs y’all,” said University of Pennsylvania’s Anthea Butler, an associate professor of religious studies.

Butler, who has since deleted her tweets and changed her Twitter account to private, made no mistake that her comments reflect everyday coursework for her students.
“Kids, I’ve been around enough to know the game. I’m not going to lose my job over something I teach in classes everyday,” she tweeted.

Ariana Grande, an Italian, shared the category’s nomination alongside Pharrell Williams, Jason Derulo, and Avicii.
Professor Butler is no stranger to questionable tweets or controversial comments. In 2013 the UPenn professor accused God of being a “white racist” after George Zimmerman’s not-guilty verdict was announced.
