COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In a historic vote, students at a Colorado Springs high school have crowned a transgender girl the homecoming princess.

"I was like even if I don't win I've already helped a lot of people show them that they can be themselves," 16-year-old Scarlett Lenh told our sister station KRDO-TV. "But I won and I can't stop smiling."

She was crowned the 2014 homecoming princess of Sand Creek High School at a Friday night football game.

Scarlett was escorted onto the field at halftime by two of her best friends. As her name was announced, the crowd erupted in cheers.

Scarlett, biologically a boy, was born Andy Lenh. But she identifies as a female and all year she has worn girl's clothing.

"I feel more comfortable like this," Scarlett said.

School District 49 released a statement that read in part, "Our board policy sets the standard that we do not exclude any person from participating in any program or activity on the basis of gender activity and gender expression."
