my mom is deathly afraid of snakes... it was funny growing up because she would mow around the house with a push mower first before my dad took the tractor around the yard. you could tell when she saw a snake because she would go off path and mow the fuck out of that thing

I don't like spiders in the house, but I'm not scared of them. I definitely have a healthier respect for the snakes in my area.

We have lots of different snakes in Colorado, but only 4 venomous ones

Have you ever come across one of the venomous ones?

Teh One Who Knocks
09-16-2014, 10:54 AM
One of the rattlesnakes before, couldn't tell you which one it was though. It was probably 4 feet long or so and was in a field near a building I used to work at.

Rattlesnakes are supposedly common down here. Oddly enough, in the 20+ years I've lived here, I've only seen two Eastern Diamondbacks, no Timber and no Pygmies. I live near a river and I've seen a Cottonmouth on one occasion. I've never seen a Coral Snake nor a Copperhead.

Everything else I've seen has been nonvenomous, black racers, green snakes, and such. My neighbor's cat hunts them down and catches and kills at least 2 of them every week.

Teh One Who Knocks

Can we borrow that cat? We have a snake living underneath the back steps. I've tried to get rid of it, but it keeps coming back. And it's driving the dogs nuts, especially Pepper. I'm not sure what kind of snake it is, but it's probably between 2 and 3 feet long and it's not very big around diameter-wise.

DemonGeminiX

It probably comes out to hunt at night, looking for bugs and junk like that. Your summers are brutally hot so it's getting out of the heat in the day time. How does it get under? Is there free access? Can you get under there (not that you would given that there's a snake there, but just sayin')?

I don't think I can speak for my neighbors when considering shipping their cat to a complete stranger out West.

It's just concrete steps in the back and there's a hole/space at the base where the steps meet the foundation, that's where it's going. From what I've tried to read about snake repellents, they seem to be hit or miss.

DemonGeminiX
09-16-2014, 11:29 AM
Back in the day before the back porch was closed in, we had a snake crawl up on the porch and stay there just hanging out. We sprayed it with lighter fluid and it took off like lightning into the woods out back. Needless to say, we had the back porch screened in not long after.

If you can get a hold of some generic lighter fluid and spray it, then maybe it'll take off and you can find a way to close off that hole.

I'm not telling you to light it on fire, mind you...

solution : more concrete

last summer we had a bee's nest under our step, just a little hole under the side of the back step.

So Brilliance here sprays the hell out of the area with our water hose (to really piss them off) them I got some dirt and filled in the hole...

didn't realize that angry bees are quite industrious and before nightfall we heard this loud(er) hum under the step and then a new hole appeared and bees came flooding out.

my father said something about pest repellent, couldn't hear him because I was busy being stooopid :)
