A Scottish passport control checkpoint has sprung up on the border between England and Scotland.

A guard and barrier were spotted on the Scottish border with a sign suggesting it would be opened officially on September 19, 2014, the day after the referendum.

A piper called Alan Smith was said to be the first man set to walk across the border.

But while signs for the ‘Scottish Border Agency’ may have seemed realistic, motorists needn’t be alarmed.

The checkpoint, at Carter Bar, near Jedburgh, is part of an elaborate prank in a bid to ‘lighten’ the mood.

Jon Parker Lee, the organiser of the mock border control, said he wasn’t taking sides in the vote but hoped both countries would be ‘united’ in laughter.

‘We’ve staged this together as a group of Scotland and English. We’re simply united in having a laugh,’ he said.

‘Come what may, we all love a wind-up, and maybe this will give everyone a laugh and a break from the ever-increasing heat of the debate.’

So would Scotland get a border control if it became independent?

Alex Salmond hasn’t marked any checks but Ed Miliband says border guards may be considered the other side of the border.
