The mother of Stephen Sutton, the teenager who raised £5 million for cancer research before his death, has spoken of her ‘immense pride’ for her son’s fundraising effort.

The news comes as the Teenage Cancer Trust have announced how the £5 million raised will be spent, including contributing £270,000 to a new unit in the The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.

Stephen became a house hold name earlier this year after remaining cheerful and defiant in the face of his terminal bowel cancer right up until his death in May.

Jane Sutton said: ‘My son, Stephen, was courageous and inspirational.

‘His selfless fundraising and positive attitude touched people across the world and the huge outpouring of love and support he received in return was humbling.’

The money will also be used to train professionals who work with teenagers and young adults with cancer, as well as being invested in several other projects.

Christine Jason, Teenage Cancer Trust head of regional fundraising (North), said: ‘The money from Stephen’s Story is in addition to the relentless fundraising by many patients and families, trusts, companies, schools, colleges and local communities.

‘It’s an incredible amount of money and we are extremely grateful, but we are still not reaching every young person who needs our help, so there is still much to do.’
