WASHINGTON — Apple will no longer unlock encrypted iPhones or iPads for police. The company made the announcement late Wednesday night.
According to the Washington Post, the move is tied to Apples’ latest mobile operating system, iOS 8.
Apple has reworked its encryption in a way that makes it nearly impossible for anyone but the device’s owner to gain access to data stored on phones.
The company used to keep possession of the information to unlock devices for legally binding police requests, but it will no longer do so.
