How many of you are actually prepared for a disaster? Now, when I mean "prepared", I don't mean just guns and ammunition, although they certainly are a factor in survival in the face of a breakdown of society.

Looking around my place, I can tell you that I probably am not ready at all. I doubt I have enough water in the event the system broke down, or non-perishable food to tide me over for that matter. Although I'm probably in a good location to hunker down for a while.

I guess I would be for a few days, but long term definitely not.

There are some things I should actually invest in....candles, battery powered lantern, battery powered radio, more canned and non-perishable food. :-k

I think if anything major was to happen, I would probably gather as much stuff as I could and get away from the city and head into the mountains

I think Costco sells emergency kits that are good for like 2 weeks per person and store for a year or two.

You know, I was only half joking about the being well armed thing. If it was something REALLY bad, I will be very happy to know that I will be fully able to defend myself if needed.

I think a weapon should be part of any severe emergency plan.

We have about a weeks worth of food - usually 2-3 tanks of Propane & 2 BBQ's - a case of water (however also have a 50gal rain barrel that is full and a camping filtration system). First aid kit, candles for probably 100 hrs, crank flashlights (no batteries), no real weapons (probably shouldn't say that since you guys will come and rob me)

Since we are adopting we had to create a disaster kit for each of us. But it is in case we have to leave the house or something, I thought it was a bit odd honestly. But if utilities get totally shut down I would probably be screwed. Something to start thinking about I guess. :-k

We probably have 30L of water and non-alcoholic beverages on hand. A week's worth of food. A few first-aid kits. And importantly: Good camping gear including cooking equipment and a dozen or so small propane tanks. And I recently added a rifle to my list just in case shit turns really nasty

I also have a few survival books. I know it seems cheesy... but they could save your life

If shit really was about to hit the fan and I had warning... one of the things I'd do would be to print off every piece of survival/rebuilding knowledge I could find.

In a recent beer fuelled lock in, I was voted "the one people would go to in the hope I could save them" in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

Personally, I was planning on winging it. In the event of mass disaster, there is either nothing you can do to save yourself or others, or there will be alot of empty houses/shops you could raid for supplies.

Seeing as I don't live on a fault line, or in an area that gets hit by cyclones/hurricanes, and I'm waaay above sea level, and miles from military targets. Id say Zombies are the most dangerous thing out there that isn't gonna wipe me out in the first day of panic.

frozen supplies are wasted without a generator and plenty of fuel..

Water is about the only thing you CANNOT live without, and its hard to transport easily.
sounds like a silly thing to do, but running a bath full of water when the shit hits the fan could buy yourself a week or so..

I guess I could drain, clean and refill my hottub in an emergency, add a bit of chlorine to keep the water from going stagnant it would keep and be safe to drink for quite a long time....
I also have bunnies, squirrels deer that frequent my yard and the neighbors constantly barking dogs I'm sure wouldn't be around long.

Maybe a few panels with an array of batteries would give you limited power, a small generator and reserve of fuel wouldn't be a bad idea for emergency use. Of course the noise from the generator and having any lights on at night would make you an immediate target.

With enough notice I would probably head down to my Aunts house in the mountains of South Carolina with carloads of supplies. Pretty rural area so mobs of raiders wouldn't be an issue, fireplace and 60 acres of firewood for heat, well water (needs power to pump) or a small stream nearby, some wildlife and plenty of room for a big garden if the suns not blotted out from a big asteroid strike or super volcano eruption....

....Maybe I'll go down early and start constructing my underground living quarters.

I was just thinking that with the fireplace and an unlimited supply of wood I wonder if I could put a type of turbine in the chimney hooked to an alternator to generate power....
