SPRINGFIELD – The arraignment of a Somers, Connecticut, motorist arrested early Monday for operating under the influence was just starting when Judge Patricia Poehler announced there was a problem.

The defendant, Alfredo Contreras,23, was apparently still under the influence.

“I’ve been advised … there is a strong smell of alcohol,” the judge told lawyers and probation officers early Monday afternoon in Springfield District Court.

At the judge’s request, the defendant was escorted from the courtroom to take a blood-alcohol test, his second since being arrested at 5:44 a.m. Monday by Longmeadow police.

He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor; operating a motor vehicle after license suspension; and failure to stay within marked lanes.

Following the second blood alcohol test, the judge announced that the defendant was still not sober enough to participate in his own arraignment.

A third test was set for late Monday afternoon, but the results were not available.
