A woman was shocked to discover recently that she brought a special treat back from southeast Asia. In her nose.
Daniela Liverani, 24, was traveling in southeast Asia when she was involved in a motorbike accident. After the accident, she started to notice that she was getting frequent nosebleeds and that she had a lump peeking out of her nose, but she assumed the lump was congealed blood and attributed the entire thing to the crash. After a month, however, she returned home to the UK and was shocked to discover that the cause of her bleeding and pain was not the crash after all – it was a leech.

“I tried to blow him out and grab him but I couldn’t get a grip of him before he retreated back up my nose,” said Liverani to the Daily Mail. “When I was in the shower, he would come right out as far as my bottom lip and I could see him sticking out the bottom of my nose. So when that happened, I jumped out of the shower to look really closely in the mirror and I saw ridges on him. That’s when I realized he was an animal.”

Liverani quickly went to the hospital where a doctor removed the leech from up her nose.
“It was agony,” said Liverani. “Whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose. All of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. He was about as long as my forefinger and as fat as my thumb.”
Experts say that if Liverani had not gone to the doctor when she did, the leech could have easily made its way up into her brain.
