CARACAS, Venezuela, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A picture posted online shows the shriveled and blackened leg of a 13-year-old Venezuelan girl whose snakebite injury led to severe necrosis.

The post by Instagram user juventudmedica says the 13-year-old girl was treated by Dr. Moreno-Castillo at a Caracas hospital one month after she was bitten by a snake.

The girl, a member of an indigenous tribe, was treated using traditional remedies before the severe necrosis led her to be taken to the Caracas hospital.

Dr. Arun Ghosh of Liverpool, England, viewed the photo and said the injury could still prove life-threatening even after the leg is amputated. He said the girl is likely suffering from rhabdomyolysis, which can cause muscle tissue to die throughout the body and could cause kidney damage.

"Snake venom is very complicated and depends on the species of snake," Ghosh told the Daily Mail. "But the picture shows clearly severe tissue necrosis that will need amputation, though she still may die from this due to the nature of the poison."
