Police in Oregon say they have found the body of a 6-year-old boy hours after his mother called 911 to report throwing him off the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

Newport Police chief Mark Miranda told reporters that the body was found near the Embarcadero resort late Monday.

The initial call was recorded at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time. Miranda said the boy's mother was calm and cooperative when speaking with police. KPTV reported that the woman has been taken in for questioning and was expected to be charged at some point during the night.

The Coast Guard and Lincoln County authorities led the search effort. The Coast Guard dispatched two boats and a helicopter to search the water. The county sheriff's marine patrol and county search and rescue teams were also involved.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Klingenberg told the Associated Press that he understood the body was found floating near a marina.

In May 2009, a woman tossed her two young children off a bridge in Portland, killing her 4-year-old son. A daughter, then 7 years old, survived. Amanda Stott-Smith was sentenced in 2010 to at least 35 years in prison.

The Yaquina Bay arched bridge, one of the most famous on the Oregon coast, opened in 1936. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
