It's not even Thanksgiving, but a holiday advertisement out today has gone viral that will be talked about -- and cried over -- right until Christmas morning

And, no, it's not American made.

The ad is from John Lewis, an upscale department store chain in Great Britain with 43 tony locations. The chain's annual marketing mission seems to be to outdo itself every holiday season, and this year's effort -- about a boy and his penguin -- is a hum-dinger.

Company executives on Thursday declined to discuss the back story or the driver behind the new ad posted on YouTube, which is part of the chain's $11 million marketing effort. "We like people to sort of figure it out for themselves," said a company spokeswoman.

The ad is about a little boy, Sam, who thinks his pet penguin, Monty, is lonely for a companion -- and takes heartbreaking action. The 2 minute 10-second video, which is closing-in on 1 million YouTube views just hours after posting, also has a version that will debut on TV in the UK on Friday. The ad is set to the track 'Real Love', sung by Tom Odell, and originally written and recorded by John Lennon.

"We hope this uplifting tale of Sam's love for his friend Monty will remind people of the magic of Christmas through a child's eyes and inspire them to think how they can make the festive season extra special for their friends and loved ones," said Craig Inglis, Marketing Director at John Lewis, in a statement.

One viewer of the spot, Peter Varga, posted this comment on YouTube: You should put a warning though: do not watch at work, it will make you go soft.

No, we won't play Scrooge and give away the ad. But it's important to keep watching until the very, very end.

And believe in penguin power.

Kid's a delusional, sexually-obsessed loser-from-the-word-"GO". Medicate him. Merry Christmas!
