The Navy is investigating claims that some of the first female sailors to serve on submarines were secretly recorded while undressing and showering, a top officer told the Associated Press.
Vice Adm. M.J. Connor, the commander of the Navy's submarine force, said in a letter Thursday that the alleged perpetrators have been taken off of the submarine in question, the USS Wyoming, during the probe. The nuclear-armed submarine is based at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia.
A source told the Navy Times Wednesday that the perpetrators allegedly distributed videos that were thought to show at least three female officers showering and undressing. The recordings were made over a period of more than a year.
The Navy Times reported that it is possible that both males and females were filmed in the shower, but the source said that only the videos of women were released. According to a report about the incident, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service was investigating a 24-year-old male second class petty officer for allegedly making and distributing the tapes.
In addition, the Navy Times reported that many of the women were unhappy with how the Navy is handling the allegations.
According to the newspaper, the incident report referred to the allegations a “privacy violation” instead of something more serious, such as “sexual harassment.”
A Kings Bay spokeswoman declined to give further details of the Navy’s probe to the Associated Press. Spokeswoman Lt. Leslie Hubbell told the Navy Times that the incident is a case of alleged “criminal activity.”
"The Navy became aware of the alleged criminal activity in November 2014 and promptly began an investigation, which is ongoing," she said in a statement.
The Navy said 59 women now serve on American submarines after it began integrating the previously all-male force in 2011.
