MINEOLA, N.Y. – A New York woman who says she was falsely arrested when she took pictures for a "Support Our Troops" website has been awarded $1.12 million.

Attorney Frederick Brewington says a federal jury found that Nancy Genovese was humiliated and suffered physical abuse when county sheriff's deputies arrested her outside an Air National Guard base.

Genovese was arrested in July 2009 while taking pictures of a decorative helicopter in front of the Gabreski Airport Air National Guard base in Westhampton Beach. She was charged with criminal trespass and spent four days in jail before posting $50,000 bail. The charges were later dropped.

Genovese says she planned to put the photo on a pro-troops website.

The jury award Thursday was for compensatory damages. It will now consider punitive damages.

A Suffolk County spokeswoman declined comment.
