CONWAY, S.C. - Police in South Carolina say a man accused of sexually assaulting his nephew's girlfriend was brutally beaten by his family member before officers arrived.
William L. Mattson, 52, of Conway, South Carolina, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to Myrtle Beach Online.
The incident occurred after a New Year's party at a home Mattson shares with the nephew's father.
The nephew told police he brought his girlfriend to the home and left briefly. When he returned, he heard groaning in one of the rooms, and then kicked the door down when he couldn't find his girlfriend.
The man said he struck his uncle with his fists, repeatedly, and chased him out of the home, after he found Mattson on top of his girlfriend, police said.
Police determined that the nephew was "acting in defense for the victim" and was not charged, after the woman said nothing was consensual, WISTV reported.
Mattson was then arrested.
