This has been branded ‘probably the worst forged banknote in Manchester’.

And incredibly, the stapled photocopy was accepted at a licensed premises in the city centre as legal tender.

The funny money was later handed to a police officer in the city centre.

City centre police Inspector Phil Spurgeon said: “This is probably the worst forgery we have ever seen.

“It’s just two paper photocopies of banknotes stapled together.

“We want to make clear that we are not trying to embarrass anyone for accepting this as legal tender.

“It is just a reminder that businesses must be vigilant and watch out for forgeries.”

And it’s not just one bartender that has been fooled by the fake money.

Manchester’s Bar and Club Network spokesman Phil Burke said he has warned venues around Manchester to be aware of the scam - after nearly falling for it himself.

He said: “I have seen something similar to this recently in Manchester.

“I saw it on the floor and went over to pick it up thinking I’d found a £20 note and everyone was laughing at me.

“They look real from a distance but not close up.

“But perhaps if you’re working in a nightclub which is very dark with flashing lights you might not spot that it’s fake.

“We have been advising all our members to put training measures in place to identify forged notes, such as installing UV lights behind the bar and the special pens to detect them.

“It can be a costly mistake to accept a forged £50 note and if forgers can pass one to you you will become a target for more.”
