One of the men missing at sea off the coast of Brighton was swept in after being dared to stand at the water's edge, police have confirmed.
Dan Nicholls, 23, was with four of his friends when he was knocked off his feet by a wave in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The second missing man, Freddie Reynolds, disappeared after he dived in to rescue Mr Nicholls, investigators have claimed.
Detective Chief Inspector Carwyn Hughes said: "Their shocked friends tried to enter the water but were beaten back by the waves.

"Tragically, they saw Dan and Freddie together before they lost sight of them and called for the help of emergency services."
On Saturday afternoon, a member of the public discovered a body on Saltdean beach, which has now been identified as Mr Reynolds.
Earlier, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said their search had turned into a recovery mission, as there was "no chance of finding them alive".
One woman who watched the search unfold said: "The sea was so rough, the lifeboats looked like they were going to tip over they were being tossed around so much."
In a statement, Mr Reynolds' family said his death would leave a "huge void in a lot of people's lives".
Loved ones of the 24-year-old added: "Freddie was always looking out for his friends and family, and people loved to be around him.
"He was incredibly funny and loved a joke and a banter around the dinner table."
Mr Nicholls' relatives described him as a "sensitive individual who had a real enthusiasm for life", and as someone who was "quick, witty and very bright".
Sussex Police added: "The sea was gale force nine and very dangerous. What was a bit of fun had tragic consequences in this case.
"We would emphasise that people should keep away from the sea when it is so dangerous."
