Broadband provider Sky will automatically block adult content for all its users in the coming days.

The filter will appear on the screens of all its 5.3million customers as part of campaign to make the internet a safer place for children.

But it will be simple to opt out of the Sky Broadband Shield setting, said brand director Lyssa McGowanin a blog post today.

She wrote: ‘What we’re doing now is simply making sure that the automatic position of Sky Broadband Shield is the safest one for all – that’s ‘on’, unless customers choose otherwise.

‘So how will it work? When trying to visit a website deemed unsuitable for children under the age of 13 during the day, customers will see a page reminding them to make a choice about filtering.

‘At this point, they can accept the current setting, change their protection levels or simply turn Sky Broadband Shield off.’

Its watershed feature gives adjustable settings with age rating options (PG, 13, 18, Custom or none) for different times of the day.

The new settings come in the wake of an Ofcom study last week that found parents’ awareness of potential online risks has risen since the first report in 2013.

Last year Prime Minister David Cameron put pressure on an internet service provider to make online filtering mandatory in a bid to protect children.

Yeah, coz that's gonna stop kids watching porn  Truth be told, if a kid sees some daft message on their screen i'm willing to bet they're gonna be more likely to try to view porn........
