The oldest living woman in Scotland says the secret to her long life is to eat lots of porridge and avoid men.
Jessie Gallan, who never married, celebrated her 109th birthday on Jan. 2. She was born in a tiny two-room farm cottage, where she slept "top-to-tail" with her five sisters and one brother on a mattress filled with straw, according to the Daily Mail.
“My secret to a long life has been staying away from men,” Gallan told MailOnline. “They’re just more trouble than they’re worth.”
“I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning, and have never gotten married,” she adds.

While Gallan is the oldest person in Scotland, she is not the oldest in the world. Misao Okawa, of Osaka, Japan, celebrated her 116th birthday back in March. She has been a widow for 83 years (her husband died in 1931), saying that with good genes, sleep, exercise, and eating some sushi “you will live a long time,” according to USA Today.
