COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - El Paso County welfare recipients suspected of abusing drugs or alcohol will soon be required to comply with a substance abuse treatment plan to keep benefits.
Beginning Monday, people in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program will have to be screened by a certified addiction counselor for substance abuse if county caseworkers have a reasonable suspicion they are not following the rules.
According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, the requirements are designed to ensure benefits do not support drug use.
An American Civil Liberties Union representative says the policy amounts to an invasion of privacy.
