A man who hoped to become a delivery driver came up with an ingenious idea of realising his dream recently after failing the theory test 15 times – he would get his friend to take it for him.

Mohammed Al Zafari asked friend Emaad Alkaabi to stand in for him during the next test, but unfortunately Mr Alkaabi, a certified driver, also failed it.

Four months later they turned up together at the DVLA test centre in Canterbury, Kent who had been tipped off to the scheme.

Alkaabi sailed through the test, but police were called and arrested him the 29-year-old who is now starting a nine-month sentence after admitting the con.

Recorder Michael Turner said he was surprised Iraqi-born Al Zafari wasn’t with him in the dock at Canterbury Crown Court.

Prosecutor Mukhtiar Singh said Alkaabi told police his friend had failed the theory 15 times but was desperate to land a job delivering leaflets for a fast food restaurant.

Defending, Laura Phillips said Alkaabi ‘didn’t think this through.’

She continued: ‘No money changed hands between the two.

‘He was just doing his friend a favour because he knew he was having difficulties passing the theory test and offered to take the test for him.’

The judge said this constituted as a very serious offence because it would have led to someone being able to drive on the road, with insurance, who was not qualified.
