A high school student in Lone Peak, Utah was forced to wear a coat over the dress she wore to a dance last weekend because it was deemed inappropriate.
Gabi Finlayson said she bought the dress while in Paris, France with her family, and was excited to bring it home and wear it to the Lone Peak High School Preference Dance. The dress reminded her of her movie idol, Audrey Hepburn.
When she arrived at the school, Finlayson said she was stopped by a faculty member and asked to put on a shawl or a coat because the dress she was wearing exposed her shoulders. “She said, ‘Would you mind putting on a shawl?’ I didn't want to make a big scene so I said, yes. I had a coat in the car so I had to go back and get it,” she said. The teen said she felt embarrassed that she had to cover up her dress, especially considering that there were other girls at the dance with outfits she thought more revealing than hers.
“There were a lot of dresses that were very short, very tight, a lot more exposing or revealing than mine,” she said. Four out of 1,200 students were reportedly told to cover up because their outfits violated the school’s dress code for formal events.
“Formals, backless dresses and/or tops may not extend beyond the bottom of the shoulder blades. Girls’ dresses and tops must have a 2″ minimum strap on each shoulder. Shawls, boleros and other shrugs are acceptable if worn over the dress at all times. Cleavage covered,” the dress code reads.
Finlayson’s mother, Kristy Kimball, feels the school is sending the wrong messages to girls about how they should present themselves. “How have we gotten to the point that we look at shoulders as if they're somehow pornographic?” Kimball said. “As if they are this shameful thing.”
The teen said she felt as though her school was shaming girls for what boys might think. “Somehow my shoulders are sexualized,” she said.

Lone Peak principal Rhonda Bromley responded to the incident, saying that students and faculty were made aware of the dress code and approved of the regulations.
