A toddler gave away a woman trying to hide drugs in her clothes during a traffic stop when he reached inside her shirt and pulled out a baggie of cocaine, Sheriff’s Office investigators said.
Volusia deputies pulled over the car with dark tinted windows and an open trunk with an unsecured bicycle on Derbyshire Road near Daytona Beach at 9:36 a.m. Sunday.
The driver appeared nervous and deputies saw passenger Candyce Harden in the front seat. In the back seat were Crystal Matthews and an 11-month boy, investigators said.
Deputies checked Matthews and discovered she was on “Florida Inmate Release status” for the sale/manufacture/or delivery of cocaine, reports said.
As deputies checked out Harden’s driver’s license, a K-9 unit arrived on scene. The occupants of the car were asked to step out of the car and Harden was directed to take the small boy out, reports detail. A search of the car revealed no drugs and a female deputy was called to search the women, reports state.
As deputies handed back Harden’s driver’s license, the toddler reached inside Harden’s shirt and pulled out a baggie with some cocaine in it. Harden quickly grabbed the baggie from the child and threw it on the ground, investigators said. Three more baggies with cocaine residue were found. Pills without a prescription were also found in Harden’s purse, deputies said.
Harden was charged with child abuse, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of pills without prescription, possession of paraphernalia and smuggling contraband into a prison facility, jail records show. Harden was released after posting $4,500 bail, court records show.
