Sarah Willis, 19, claimed Bilal Saddique, 29, was a “controlling man” who wanted her to comply with Islamic standards of dress and hated her wearing “tight and short clothing” because “other men looked at her.”
The law firm worker stabbed Mr Saddique in the leg at the home they shared in Blackburn, Lancs, in a row over her friendship with a work colleague.
The blow severed an artery and BT engineer Mr Saddique died despite Willis’s attempts to stem the bleeding, Preston Crown Court heard.
The incident was the climax of the couple’s stormy three-year, on-off relationship which began after Wills converted to Islam.
Asma Day, a colleague of Willis, said in a statement: “He wanted her to cover up because other men looked at her. She wore Western clothing but always covered her arms and legs.
"She said they were going to get married. He didn’t like her wearing tight and short clothes.”
Mr Saddique had told a former girlfriend that his relationship with Willis was “beset by arguments” but that he had intended to marry her despite having not introduced her to his family.
He would refer to Willis as “slag” and “bitch” and became suspicious of her platonic friendship with a male work colleague after they were photographed together at the office Christmas party in 2013.
The fatal argument in August last year came after Mr Saddique went to collect Willis from work and saw her colleague drive away at the same time.
Willis rang 999 and told a paramedic: “Help me my boyfriend is bleeding to death.”
Willis told police when arrested: “We had an argument, had a bit of a fight. I grabbed a knife and then he grabbed it off me then he grabbed it and stabbed himself. I can’t believe this has happened all over a stupid argument.”
Prosecutor Francis McIntee said: “The evidence shows that the stabbing occurred in the heat of the moment.
“But she lashed out with a kitchen knife intending to cause really serious harm. It was driven deep into Mr Saddique’s thigh in an act of anger.”
Willis denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter. The trial continues.
