Giving an all-new meaning to the concept of ‘live yoghurt’, a woman has undertaken an experiment in which she made yoghurt with her vagina.
Cecilia Westbrook who is a MD/PhD student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, concocted a whole two batches of ‘personal’ yoghurt after asking ‘Why is there a whole cookbook of cum-based recipes and not a SINGLE THING on Google about culturing jazz juice?’ True story.
Her friend and journalist Janet Jay then documented her culinary experiment on Motherboard.
There was some chemistry behind her thinking, too. Westbrook noted that seeing as probiotics are good for your gut and are also produced by your vagina, then why not culture the good stuff from down there to benefit her belly?

Jay explains: ‘Every vagina is home to hundreds of different types of bacteria and organisms. The dominant bacteria is called lactobacillus, which also happens to be what people sometimes use to culture milk, cheese, and yogurt.’
Spurred on, she made her yoghurt overnight, collecting her ‘natural ingredient’ with a wooden spoon and culturing it in a bowl. She woke up to a respectable sized sample, which she ate with blueberries.
She said it tasted like ‘Indian yoghurt’, aka a little sour. Our stomachs are churning just thinking about it.
While she didn’t experience any side-effects, when they consulted Larry Forney, a microbiologist at the University of Idaho, he said that while he liked what she was doing in theory, it could be risky as ‘she could end up with a bad batch’, because when you take a sample from you vagina ‘you’re not just taking the lactobacilli. You’re taking everything.’
So, in short, it’s not the best idea to snack on stuff you’ve found down there. Looks like Westbrook’s home-grown probiotic won’t be coming to a supermarket near you anytime soon.
