Two Tennessee girls high school basketball teams have been banned from their district’s postseason after reportedly trying to lose a game against each other.

The Tennessean reports the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association placed both schools on restrictive probation after a district consolation game Saturday where the organization said both schools “played to lose the game.”

A report from one of the high school referees in charge of the game found that Riverdale missed 12 free throws intentionally and Smyrna would not cross the half-court line causing a violation. The report also said that one Smyrna player even stood in the lane and waited for a referee to call a three-second violation on her.

Although both schools pleaded with the organization to allow their players to continue on with the game without the head coaches, TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress told the newspaper said the decision to remove both teams from the playoffs stems from the actions of the players.

Childress claimed that Riverdale head coach Cory Barrett started talking to the girls about “bracketology” or where they would be if they won and lost.

Smyrna won the contest 55-29 scoring most of its points in the final minutes of the contest. They would have played the defending state champion Blackman. Riverdale would have been placed on the opposite side of the bracket, only meeting the state champion if they won their games.
