A McDONALD’S restaurant plagued by trouble has been ordered to keep bouncers on the premises.

The fast food giant’s Argyle Street branch in Glasgow - the busiest in Scotland - must employ four security staff on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as one each day between Sunday and Thursday.

Police Scotland had complained to council bosses that the restaurant was a drain on their resources and that they had to regularly patrol the area after recording over 200 incidents in just 14 months.

McDonald’s were ordered to employ bouncers last June and since then there has been a massive drop in crime-related incidents on the premises.

They had appealed the licensing board’s decision, claiming to have four bouncers on patrol every night was disproportionate to the problem and was affecting their reputation.

Both the police and licencing board agreed the number of incidents had dropped, but they ordered the firm to keep on top of the situation at a meeting today.

As part of their catering licence being awarded, the firm will have to maintain regular contact with Police Scotland, as well as employing more stewards on busy occasions such as when football matches or concerts are taking part in the city.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “The committee listened to a range of views put forward and made an appropriate decision.”

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said: “We are pleased with the Committee’s ruling today and delighted to hear confirmation from Police Scotland that the number of incidents in the store have dropped significantly, as a result of our improved security measures. We will continue to provide four guards during the late night period on a Friday and Saturday, and one guard for Sunday through to Thursday – as we have voluntarily done so over the past seven months.

“The safety of our customers and colleagues is of paramount importance to us and we will continue to work in partnership with the council, police and local community going forward.”
