The report revealed that the Agency’s lawyers used the rulings from Israel's Supreme Court to construct a legal case to justify the illegal interrogation methods.

The controversial report published Tuesday by the United States Senate Intelligence Committee on the torture methods used by the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) revealed that the Agency’s lawyers used the rulings from Israel’s Supreme Court to construct a legal case to justify the illegal interrogation methods.

According to the report, in November 2001 some CIA officers were concerned they may need legal justification for the interrogation methods they had used when questioning Al-Qaeda suspects after the 9/11 attacks.

The document says the Israeli ruling which said that “torture was necessary to prevent imminent, significant, physical harm to persons, where there is no other available means to prevent the harm,” was cited.

Israel has been widely criticized for using torture methods on prisoners, with human rights organizations and the Public Committee Against Torture having denounced the practices while also demanding Israel’s Supreme Court outlaw various interrogation methods.

The disturbing report on CIA’s interrogation methods was released after five years of collecting data and is based on 6.2 million pages of documents, photos and other files. The release also revealed that prisoners were or are still being held in secret facilities in Europe and Asia.

The interrogation methods included rectal probing, sleep deprivation for more than a week or continuing threat, sometimes with an electric drill, the document says

U.S. President Barack Obama said the report detailed a “troubling” program and showed that some of the actions that were taken were contrary to his country’s “values.” However, it unclear what actions, if any, the U.S. government will take regarding the report or the torture methods its agents may still be using.
