A couple was arrested after police discovered that their five children were living in the family’s trailer in unsanitary conditions with a dead family member.
According to reports, 25-year-old Melissa Kay Lynn Poole and 39-year-old Jeremy Daniel Disher were arrested and charged with five counts of misdemeanor child abuse. When authorities arrived at the home to investigate the report of a death, they discovered that the children’s 62-year-old grandfather had been dead for at least a day. Poole and Disher told police that they didn’t know he was dead the entire time, and the kids had reportedly gone in to see him during that time.
While inside the home, officers discovered lots of food, trash, and dirty clothes all over the floors and noticed plumbing leaks and raw sewage in the bathrooms. The children, ranging in age from 9 months to 13 years, were placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services when their parents were arrested.

“We had to stop letting our kids play with them because our daughter repetitively got lice from them over and over again," one neighbor said, according to NBC 12. "We'd get rid of them. Everything would be fine, and then she would play with the kids again and she'd get them.”
County inspectors have since deemed the house unsafe.
