It was an early summer morning and all Talbert Mitchell Bright wanted was a can of Natural Ice beer.
But James Johnson, 32, who was sitting in the Northwest Washington park with Bright, told him no. When Bright went into Johnson’s cooler anyway to grab one of the cans, prosecutors alleged that Johnson reached into his bag, pulled out a 9mm pistol and shot Bright three times, once in his chest.
On Monday, a D.C. Superior Court judge sentenced Johnson, of the District, to 15 years in prison for Bright’s killing.
Johnson pleaded guilty in November to voluntary manslaughter in Bright’s death.
Prosecutors say Johnson was in a small park in the 200 block of Massachusetts Avenue NW drinking beer with other individuals on June 28, 2014, around 2:45 a.m. Prosecutors say Bright and Johnson got into an argument over the can of beer before Johnson reached into a black backpack, took out the gun and shot Bright.
