A high school in Lexington, Massachusetts is at the center of controversy surrounding the decision to cancel an American-themed dance because it excluded other nationalities.

According to reports, the American-themed dance was voted on by the dance committee, but one day, school officials informed students that the theme was not okay. Despite anger from students, the school says they stand by their decision.

“Given the diverse demography of our community it was suggested by the advisers that the students come maybe national pride theme so they could represent their individual nationalities,” Carol Pilarski, Assistant Superintendent, told WHDH.

Some students say they don’t understand school officials’ explanations.

“People consider America to be a melting pot, so the fact that it was even considered offensive is what people are a little surprised about,” Sneha Rao, a student at Lexington High School, said.

The dance has reportedly been reschedule for late April.
