Land of beautiful and fearsome landscapes, bagpipes and the world’s best whisky.
Or maybe not, in the latter case.
Despite its reputation as the world’s number one whisky producer, Scotland’s celebrated single malt appears to be under threat after the Taiwanese Kavalan Solist took best whisky at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards.

Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique – to use its full name – was described as being ‘surprisingly smooth on the palate… like Bourbon-infused milk chocolate, immediately and subtly liquor rich.’
Sounds delicious.
It is produced by the King Car distillery in the Yilan County area of the island, where it matures in American oak barrels that previously held white and red wines.
Scotland’s Darkness! did take the award for best grain whisky, however, while Japan’s Nikka Teketsura Pure Malt took best blended malt.
