LOVELAND, Colo. - A Rottweiler named Brutus is up and running thanks to prosthetic limbs developed by a Denver company.

"As a baby he was left out in some extreme temperatures and sustained frostbite on his feet," Laura Aquilina, the dog’s foster owner, wrote on gofundme.com. "The cruel "breeders" decided the best option was to chop off his toes with an axe or other crude obect (sic). Brutus was left mamed (sic) and crippled and due to the poor way in which this was done, he is in pain every day of his life."

People have donated more than $12,500 for Brutus’ prosthetics and physical therapy.

Brutus is the second dog ever known to receive four prosthetic limbs, according to Ashley Manweiler, with Colorado State University.

"He is learning to walk again with help from OrthoPets, an animal prosthetics developer in Denver, and pet orthopedics experts at Colorado State University’s James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital," Manweiler wrote.

"In preparation for prosthetics, Brutus underwent paw surgery with Dr. Trent Gall, a CSU veterinary alumnus," Manweiler said. "The procedure removed bone fragments, dew claws, and two toes left from the botched amputation."

In upcoming months, Brutus will go through underwater treadmill therapy, balance activities and other neuro re-education therapies to adjust to his new limbs, according to Manweiler.
