A Seattle man accused of sneaking ‘upskirt’ videos of at least seven women during the city’s gay pride festival has been charged with voyeurism.
King County prosecutors claim Shane Shibayama hid an iPhone inside a book and then used that hidden camera to peek up the skirts of women attending Seattle Pride Festival on June 29, 2014.
Shibayama, a 51-year-old Windermere neighborhood resident, was arrested at the festival and is alleged to have admitted to peeping.
“When I think about it, I’m just so full of shame,” Shibayama told a Seattle Police Department detective, according to charging papers.
“It totally disgusts me,” he continued, according to charging papers. “What was I thinking?”
The day Shibayama was arrested, a witness reported seeing Shibayama sneak his hidden camera under the skirts of several women at Seattle Center, the detective said in court papers. Police responded and arrested Shibayama, who was released later that day.
According to charging papers, officers seized a book Shibayama had hollowed out to hide his cell phone. A hole had been cut in the cover to provide the phone’s camera a view. Shibayama is alleged to have told police he learned to conceal the camera by researching peeping online.
Shibayama later explained he was making the videos for “titillation” and claimed he hadn’t previously “upskirted” women, the detective told the court. According to charging papers, Shibayama explained he’d been watching such videos online for some time.
“Shane told me that he thinks he has been watching ‘too much porn’ on a daily basis,” the detective said in court papers. “Shane told me he watches over an hour of adult pornography per day and he thinks he should not be watching so much.”
Investigators claim to have recovered 11 videos from the phone, at least one of which showed the buttocks and genitals of unsuspecting women. A total count on the number of women pictured in the videos was not given in charging papers.
Shibayama has been charged in King County Superior Court with voyeurism, a felony sex crime. He has not been jailed.
