Police in Balch Spring, Texas, say that parents of a 2-year-old child, who recently died, participated in a "rising" ceremony to resurrect their toddler inside a home church.

A tipster told police on March 26 that the child died on March 21 or 22, but the parents failed to report it to authorities, noted NBC News.

The church, Congregacional Pueblo de Dios, believed the child was possessed by demons and the toddler was deprived of food for 25 days, reports Telemundo (video below).

Parents and other members of the church reportedly took the dead child to Mexico to be buried.

“We don’t know if this was to try and resurrect the spirit of the child and we don’t know if this was to try and resurrect the child themselves or what exactly that service or ceremony encompasses,” Balch Spring Police Lt. Mark Maret told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.

Police recently arrested Araceli Meza, who is reportedly the secretary and/or pastor of the church.

Meza was "charged with injury to a child by omission," notes NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
