No one wants to live in South Dakota.

It's so bad that the state's new ad campaign touts the advantages it has over Mars.

"Why die on Mars when you can live in South Dakota?" it asks.

The comparison makes sense when you think of it this way: More than 200,000 people applied to be prospective astronauts on the first trips to Mars, which could take place in 2024, if plans go well. (There's no way to get home, by the way.)

"We think Mars has what South Dakota wants -- thousands of people lining up to live there," said Pat Costello, commissioner of the Governor's Office of Economic Development. "So we decided to have a little fun with it."

Not only does South Dakota have an "abundance of oxygen," the ad boasts, but it also has "plenty of jobs" and, well, you can actually live there. On Mars, the air isn't breathable and the surface is "cold and barren."

Costello said that the ads follow months of research conducted by the state, which showed that people couldn't see themselves living in South Dakota because they didn't know enough about it.

South Dakota officials want to show that it has much more than Mount Rushmore. They hope the Mars ad generates buzz that brings people to watch other web videos that tout South Dakota's low tax rate and a friendly business climate, as well as lots of fishing, art festivals, and golf.

South Dakota has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At 3.5%, it's well below the national unemployment rate of 5.5%.

beats me, my parents spend about 4 months of the year there, so we visit for about 1.5 weeks per summer

Cold as hell in winters, hot in summer. Economy sucks (at least in the late 80s when I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB) spring time is actually really nice. The black hills are neat, and so are the badlands. Good place to visit, but I'd never live there again

B-1b as well. I was SS (security specialist) some nights were so bad I'd crawl inside the heater hose They'd have out to keep the planes from freezing. South Korea was pretty cold too when I was there.

Spy? Nah, that would have been a different department of the AF. Think glorified security guard crossed with Army infantry. Lol

I've had a lot of people tell me that Korea was the coldest place they've ever been.

A few years ago, I was returning a rental car at the Philly airport during the winter. An older gentleman was checking me in. I mentioned something about how cold it was. He said that it was nowhere near to how cold he had ever been. It was the combination of how he said it, and his age that made me say "You fought in Korea". He smiled and said "yes".

I don't remember what the temps were when I was there, but it was cold as hell. The coldest I've ever been was at Ellsworth. Some where around -25 f iirc. That was actual temp. With the wind it was killer.

Yeah, but it's as cold as hell for people who've lived in the South for a long time, Dee. Especially if we're talking higher elevations. 20° F at 1000 feet above sea level is a lot worse than 20° F at sea level. At higher elevations, temperatures take on a harsher character.

-25°F is gonna suck at any elevation for people who aren't used to it.

Like DGX said. I grew up on the gulf coast. Occasional freezes. Mostly mild temps in winter, brutal summers and humidity. Basically at sea level. Last two years of high school was in eastern New Mexico, about 3,000 ft, sorta cold but still hot in summer, justin humidity. South Dakota was a shock.
