If I may add to the thread...

James Taylor has a bunch of stuff on YouTube that really opened my eyes. I've been playing for years and to hear him give what's essentially master classes - even down to the nitty gritty on nails and this one on how he tunes his guitar is wonderful. ( It's a little different than the prescribed way )

If you like this one, go out and watch 'em all...

Damn...I wish I had YouTube and Tablature when I was starting out! :)
no shit, right? back in the day I wore the fug out of my tape player learning metallica solos. play 2 seconds, rewind, listen 5x again, try to play it...I learned far too many solos that way, but there was no other way until the tab books started showing up, then it was a fuggin cakewalk.

if I had the time I'd tab out another scale I dont have down in muscle memory and learn every corresponding fret....that's what I did with a few others and once you're done recognizing the pattern at any point on the fretboard, then mix it up and skip all over with the pattern.

when I started this,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hhZ-ECq60U

and you can hear one of his strings has shitty intonation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ruiy_o3XuNc

then combine in otherr ideas within the pattern,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHUBdVQTyXU

any note in the pattern is legit, fuggin tear it up

That's one reason I was considering changing out the bridge on that old guild my dad gave me when I was in second grade - with a straight bar bridge, you have no way to adjust the intonation on the guitar, you just have to hope its well made. Also a lot of what he's talking about with the stepped detune is resolved by an accurately balanced truss rod. the more bowed the truss is, the sharper your notes will be. Intonation winds up being significant especially as you explore alternate tunings - a straight bar bridge, forget it, detune and the % of your notes that are accurate decreases, more significantly the more away from E std you get.

I've had to set up sooo many instruments over the years...between my best friend and I, 3 acoustics, 2 classical, 8 or 10 electrics, 5 or 6 basses, and being in new england means the wood is moving like a mofo every change of seasons, so for the core group of instruments that I keep in constant setup-tune, I'm doing them often enough that I wound up assuming all instrument tech duties since my process is nailed down. Last string change I did I had it all done truss adjustment included in like 7 minutes, with that little snark tuner clipped to the head. (when people record, they're rechecking tune every song or two, so an abundance of tuners are present also.)

one of the most important aspects of playing, especially with bass - is muting. I saw these fuggin guys play last week, and their aim was to "put on a show" and jump around and "go crazy." they were absolutely terrible, buncha fuggin noise, I went outside after 2 songs. there was basically no muting at all anywhere unless they actually stopped playing, it was a catastrophe far as I was concerned.

anything that's ringing that should not be is discordant MUD. more egregious a violation on bass imho, because bass is what gives the mix its "weight" - ringing strings on bass are adding a thick layer of discordant mud onto the entire bottom of your mix. and I say mix whether you're live or recorded. by contrast, the folks watching us play last week said goddam, this sounds just like a fully polished CD recording we just listened to ;)

so here's the keys:

pay particular attention to muting the strings above and below where you are playing. whether it is left hand or right hand, use whichever is more appropriate. or even a finger - little tricks like using the fretting finger, to both fret a note and have just a bit of fingerboard overlap so that it mutes the next lower string can work wonders since the fret hand thumb is usually only good for the lowest string.

any guitarist that learns a bit of metal needs to learn how to use the side of his picking hand for palm muting. but this can also be extrapolated when you're not chuggin at the big strings by a slightly abducted motion of the picking wrist for when you are playing smaller strings and need staccato or muting. (on bass , my pinky often performs this function by resting on the string (I was going to say picked, but then I realized for me its almost always fingered, then I laughed like beavis, I said fingered  ) when I need staccato notes - pinky isnt quite enough for a full mute so if I need that then the rest of the hand, or the fretting hand, will come into that action.)

also examine the difference between left hand muting at various points - there are times where I need a little bit of mute but I still need the note to ring, so my fret hand mute winds up coming quickly after playing the note, usually middle finger coming down to tap the string - what fret it is near when it does so, depends on what sort of mute I need - so the mute is different at .5, 1, 1.5, 2, but past that, the mute pretty much kills the note.

where on the string to pick or finger also makes a significant different in the timbre of the note - the close to the end (bridge) the note is played, the more overtone string harmonics will be prevalent in the note played; conversely, playing more toward the middle will produce more of the fundamental tone and less of the overtone. this is another area I am more elaborate with on bass - there's riffs I play where the note on the 1 is up past the neck pickup, but other parts of the riff I play at the bridge pickup, to introduce a little more dynamics to the riff.

also with regard to timbre - we know its different as the string gets thicker - but a similar "weight" of timbre becomes evident as you go across the strings - i.e. as the string gets thicker, a move towards the bridge will tighten up the note just a bit and make the timbre just a bit more like the next higher string played more towards the neck. another thing that seems to be more prevalent on bass, especially when I go to the big .125 string, most often I am playing around the bridge pickup on it, because its *so* thick that the fundamental tone comes out too much and not enough overtone as you move toward the neck.

It's too bad that artists like Simon get remembered for his later, more watered down pop hits where his guitar playing is more of a background thing. There's quite a few artists like him. Great players and their best work is generally forgotten or not as prevalent as their more recent stuff. And this above was 1968? Talk about unplugged...no retakes or pretend guitar playing over pre recorded track there

There's an alternate network TV channel that plays a lot of old TV shows, and they were playing old Andy Williams' episodes. I was flipping through and they had just got started on that and I couldn't believe the clarity of the guitar playing. I have a Simon and Garfunkel box set and I always skip over Scarborough. I'm gonna have to sit down with my acoustic and take a good serious listen to it. From I could see, he's got a capo on 7.

Well, I bought an Epiphone Casino last may and am pleased with it. It did require a setup, and I had to try about 3 or 4 of them before I found one that felt "right". I think with Gibsons, when I try them out, they all seem to feel much the same - that is to say, pretty great. But the Gibson equivalent to my Casino is about 3 grand, and I paid only $800. Is the Gibson nearly 4x better? I didn't think so.

Gibson is in trouble financially right now, and a loan is coming due. I also know a music store is selling "Make Gibson Great Again" hats fashioned like you-know-who's.

If you are considering a Les Paul and you want to pay Gibson money, there are plenty of manufacturers who make as-good-if-not-better ones... Like the Godin Summit Classic.

Best thing is to try them out and see.

Any of you guitarists heard of a band called Trivium? Their guitarist (Matthew Kiichi Heafy) streams on twitch, watched him for a while last night and it was pretty damn cool! He was putting together a song using his guitar and a pc, adding riffs, looping etc, really enjoyed it :) Can see him at https://www.twitch.tv/matthewkheafy - seems to be a rerun of a concert on his channel right now (music's a tad heavy for my tastes tbh, maybe more your kind of thing DGX?) but he does have a schedule:

Off Tour Schedule (Monday – Friday):*

9:30am - 11:00am EST (guitar and vocal warm up/ guitar practice streams)
11:40am - 1:15pm EST (on select days, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu streams)
3:30pm - 6:00pm EST (guitar and vocal practice/ gaming streams)
3:00pm - 6:00pm (Trivium full band practice streams if currently in rehearsal-mode)

Anyhow, just thought you fellow guitar players might enjoy watching him :)

Been looking and listening to a ton of acoustic guitars recently and I'm now contemplating buying a 1996 Martin HD-28..........

Been playing the acoustic a lot more recently and neither my Yamaha or Seagull is really doing it for me right now so think i might splash out on one of my dream guitars! Lot of pennies though, even if i can pay it up at a relatively low rate........ i'll have to sleep on it a few more nights, i'm like Hal or DGX buying/building a PC  Lots of research done, was really split between the D-28 and the HD-28...... the HD just has a bigger sound with the scalloped bracing, and i like that big sound, i want it to project! It's a bit of an investment too i suppose, guitars like this (if kept in good, original condition) never go down in value and with it being 20+ years old already the wood will already be well dried and more resonant........... i'm talking myself into this i think

Ok, so he compared EMG active pickups to Seymour Duncan passive ones? He's using Ola Englund's signature guitar for the test.

Personally, I'm not a fan of active pickups. You can't roll off the volume to get a clean sound without channel switching. There's a loss of dynamic control with them. Besides, it feels funny having to put a 9v battery in a guitar to get the pickups to work.

The EMG's are what Metallica's used for a while since after the Master of Puppets recording sessions. I guess that's why he's playing a whole mess of Metallica songs to test the pickups out, but they don't sound the same through his rig. He needs to play through a Mark IIc+ to get the right sound.

I think both James and Kirk have signature model pickups now with EMG. Personally, I thought they sounded better with the Seymour Duncan Invaders, which is what they were using back in the day before they switched to the EMG 81s and 85s. Oh well.

I just bought another guitar

My dad bought "the cheapest electric guitar on amazon" a few days ago after watching a review video on youtube and, tbf, it ain't actually bad for £60! I got the job of setting it up for him, and of course putting it through it's paces  I stripped, cleaned and rebuilt my old Laney valve amp earlier in the week and got my multi-effects pedal back on the go, hours just disappeared! Been trying (to no avail) to get my old Ibanez Roadstar 2 working but it has me beat atm (my mate, the Ibanez's ex-owner, says it had water damage to the electrics and there is a fair bit of corrosion in there). I got it for free so no complaints, jst won't be able to play it until i can get it into my guy at the shop...... which is currently closed :(

Anyhow......... i'd always fancied a Tele, and it's one guitar i've never owned, so i started looking around and stumbled upon this video:

Anyhow......... i'd always fancied a Tele, and it's one guitar i've never owned, so i started looking around and stumbled upon this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9du3xs0-6k

Just bought a 2nd hand one on ebay for £100 including delivery  At that price it was pretty easy to push the button on!

Squiers are a surprisingly good value for a budget guitar. They're basically cheap Fenders, and in some cases, you can upgrade the Squier's hardware with Fender replacements. Squiers are usually known as the guitars you buy to mod. The Affinities are better than the Bullets, so if you picked up an Affinity, you did yourself a favor. Around November last year, my brother asked me what a good beginner guitar would be for my younger nephew and I pointed him to a Squier Affinity Stratocaster on the Guitar Center website.

My first guitar was a squire stratocaster. It's still going strong with my nephew. I rolled dressed up the fret and board edges, did a good (for me) set up. Plays as good as my MIM Strat. Did the same to my brother in laws squire strat. I kinda sorta like his better than my MIM strat. It does need different electronics and pickups though.

The most important simple upgrades to the Squiers are the nut and the output jack plate. They're both plastic and easy to break. It's a pretty cheap upgrade on both ends, you just have to get the right parts. If you do the nut right, you can make the Squier a dream to play on. A good TUSQ nut would work wonders.

I'd replace the tuners too. It kinda depends on the model year, but I think that most of them will take Fender locking tuners. I put a set on my '94 MIM strat and they rock.

Everything else depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go on the money end.

Actually, up till last year, that studio would have been friendly to you. I had built a ramp for my father in law. A couple years after he passed,I took the ramp out, and the Morgan building became my guesthouse/studio. We painted the walls, did the fake beams on the ceiling, and put in cheap laminate flooring. It looked really, really good, but the flood ruined the laminate. I really need to get off my arse and put some new flooring down.

The reason next guitar will probably not be my last is, I want a p90. I've had an es-335, and a d'angelico semi hollow. Seems semi hollow are not for me. My brother in law cried when I sold the es. Haha.

2020 Solar Guitars S1.6PP. Made in Indonesia, mahogany back, through neck, ebony board, mahogany/jojoba (sp) neck, Duncan/Solar pickups. Evertune bridge. Hands down the best neck, fret edges, etc I've ever felt, including the guitars high on the wall at the shop. I trust ran it clean through my Blackstar Artist, dirty through the Bassbreaker, Metal will have to go through my Katana once I get back from work in 2 weeks. tbf, i currently have 3 guitars that don't get touched  My two main guitars sit in a double stand in my bedroom (Martin HD-28 + Squire Tele), the other 3 are cased in a cupboard (Yamaha FG-something, Seagull S6 and an Ibanez Roadstar 2 which needs a bit of electrical work). Don't have the space for all 5, should really just sell the Yamaha and Seagull.

It's just that I never bonded with it. Each of the other guitars I can pick up and tunes just come out of it, if that makes sense.

The Samick has a Floyd Rose that's hard to set up. It was "deep purple" but time has worn away the purple flecks and it's black now black with black pickups. It actually looks a litle evil. :) TBH my skills on guitar have improved and I haven't taken it out of the case in about 2 years -- I should figure out how to restring it via YouTube - I should give it another chance. I bought it from a friend for $200 used 20 years ago and it just never clicked with me. Supposedly its the same spec as an Ibanez Shark Tooth(?) and has that neck. It looks just like this one:

Nice guitar, Noilly.

Floyds are a pain in the ass, but like anything else, the more you do it, the better you get at it. I've got 3 Ibanez guitars with Floyds on them and have been messing with the Floyd since 1993. It doesn't bother me as much like it used to, but honestly, if I'm buying a guitar today, I'm looking for a non-floating, non-locking trem system, if I'm looking for a trem system at all. The last two guitars I picked up both had set bridges.

If you're having problems getting the Floyd to zero when changing strings, then you have to either add or remove springs in the spring cavity, or even mess with the anchor screws, or both. I'd advise to install a tremsetter type device in the spring cavity when you've got it set perfect and in tune. I have tremsetters in all of my Ibanez guitars. They make life easier.

The only thing I hate about the locking/floating trems is that you have to go through hell to change the tuning of the guitar. That's why standard Fender-style trem systems and set bridges are so much better to have.

Sorry if this is going too far, but JHS has released a budget line of guitar effect pedals called the 3 series. They're very basic and each one costs $99 US (even the delay and reverb). If anyone's interested:

ESP LTD EC-256 FM Transparent Black, Limited Edition.
This was received as a gift for Christmas, have since bought two more guitars so decided to offload this one. Plays great, well suited for metal but also hard rock and other styles, it had a coil tap which is good for acquiring a variety of tones.
It does need a set up due to bends choking out around the 12th fret on the high E and B strings, should be an easy fix. Also, there is a slight issue with the bridge pickup, on occasion the output is really low, but this again is an easy fix, its either a small issue with the switch or just a general electrical problem with the pickup itself, once again easily fixable. These minor issues are the reason for the lower price. The rest of the guitar is in very good condition as displayed in photos, the only visible defect is a tiny chip on the back nest the jack input which has been highlighted in the photos. I will include a gig bag.
I dont know why people bother with things like coil taps these days  Those were old innovations that were useful before the pedal world really came alive. I wouldnt be surprised if a poor job at that was the reason it had output issues. (or if the tap is on a push button pot, those are notoriously flimsy and if you whack em too hard while playing...)

the bends choking out as he describes is similar to what I was talking to Kev about the other day - if your truss is too slack and you try to lower the bridge as a fix...

doesnt look like too bad of an instrument tho!

My first LP style was an EC. It was a 401 fm with factory dimarzio 36th pups. Actually was a great guitar. Iirc, I gave $600 for it new as it was a factory second. Very small dent on the back under the finish. I gave it to my brother in law when I bought my gibson.

If the coil splitting (humbucker) or coil tap (single coil modern high output to half wound vintage output) is decent, then you don't need to waste space on your pedalboard attempting to get those types of sounds with pedals. It saves you from the tap dancing involved. My Epiphone splits both humbuckers and the sounds resulting are quite useful... and also something I wouldn't bother thinking to look for without the coil split.

Been having a shot of my neighbours old Ibanez tonight, strangely enough it has coil tap

https://i.imgur.com/wZ4td3Z.jpg

Satriani series, lovely bit of kit tbf - was getting some really nice tones both in single coil and humbucker modes (no pedals, just straight into my valve amp)

Right boys, a bit of advice required - given that i've predominately been an acoustic guitar player all my life, what should be my "must have" pedals for putting together a pedal board? Only thing i've ever used before was an old Zoom multi-effects unit when i played/sung in a band nearly 20 years ago  Since i've been playing a lot more of late, and playing the electric a lot more i've decided to buy some pedals, likely a few of those cheap Behringer units (which are just Boss clones in a cheaper housing - at least with the analogue units). I've already got a Vintage Tube Overdrive (Ibanez Tubescreamer clone) - i'm thinking a delay pedal for sure, reverb pedal maybe.......... fuzzbox......... compressor.......... so fucking many to choose from

Lets say i was to buy 4 pedals and i'm mostly playing stuff like AC/DC, Maiden, ZZ Top, etc - what would you boys recommend? Cheers :) Planning on putting this small board together and buying either an ESP or Epiphone Les Paul standard (twin humbuckers either way) later.

I would recommend something like a pod that has a crapton of effects on it instead of buying a million individual pedals. Boss' multi effects have always been good. I traded my pod for hihats and that bass pod I found with corroded grounds cheap, fixed and gave to my son, that was some good shit too. My buddy had the Korg multi effects pedal, that was very good too but not quite as durable (but you're not playing shows far as I know, so the beadown is less...)

things like fuzzbox, reverb, delay, compressor are pretty common and pretty standard and you can get a great amount of tweakability on those particulars in the multi effects pedals, and then have a dozen other cool shits on top of 'em.

where you can get really good and thick sounding stuff from a pod is when you blend two dissimilar amp mods together, like one warm and one scratchy - they dont even have to sound good alone, but the blend...being able to do shit like that is also another plus for multi effects pedals, even the old pod pro floorboards did all that and pretty well.

Was telling my dad i almost bought another guitar today, he asks me how much, i tell him how much i bid and how much they are new.......... guess who's getting an ESP 256 for christmas? My dad's a musician too, apparently he was a fucking savage drummer when he was younger but gave it up after i came along :( After that he played bass (quite badly  ) in a covers band who only really played at our local club for friends (birthday parties and the like) - called themselves The Fossils of Funk  I've had the pleasure of playing on stage with them too, actually pretty tight tbf although somewhat limited (except Gogsie, great guitar player and family friend, that's his guitar above that i've been playing tonight).

Anyhow, my dad had also played a little bit of guitar and decided near the start of the covid lockdown crap to buy the cheapest electric guitar on amazon after watching a youtube video  This strat-clone is the worst POS i've ever played, uneven frets, sharp fret edges, cheap shit pickups, you get the idea! So, i spoke with my mum the other day and asked her if she had any plans for dads christmas, she didnt........ so i suggested we each chip in and get him a decent guitar  Looks like we'll be jammin' on christmas day :headbang:

Just so we're all clear, I didnt drop $2k plus on a gibson. I found a floor model 2018 Gibson LP "tribute" series. (Think studio, with a maple cap) it was marked wrong at $990 (should have been $1050) had some scratches, bumps, etc. Got it for $800 including taxes. Fret edges needed some work, but after that, setting it up how I wanted (top wrap ftw) I changed the pickups and wiring harness. The 2018 tribute series was the only recent one with no weight relief, mahogany neck, etc. Other years had modern or 9 hole, and/or maple necks. I may still swap the bridge pup again. Not sure.
Goof, that's awesome your pops bought you the EC.
My wife just surprised me with a Harley Benton DC jr fat in cherry red. $250. Surprisingly good fret work. Decent finish. I'm going to change the tuners and the bridge, and try some spacers order the dogear p90

I'm gonna hold my tongue here, because I'm a hopeless pedal junkie with a fuck ton of pedals. If you can get a multi-effects unit that has everything and does it reasonably well, then go that route. It'll save you a ton of cash.

Here's a listing of basic effects you might want to play around with if and when you find your unit:

Boost
Overdrive
Distortion
Fuzz
Compressor
Wah/Envelope Filter
Delay
Reverb
Tremolo
Vibrato
Chorus
Phaser
Flanger
Univibe
Rotovibe
Graphic Equalizer
etc...

Maiden, you're gonna need distortion and delay. Starting with Somewhere in Time, they went completely digital.

AC/DC is a bit dryer, but they need a nasty crunchy OD/Distortion. Think a 70s era Marshall Superlead Plexi cranked to crunch to hell. That's Angus all the way. From what I understand, he owns 50 of them. But you can duplicate that easily with a single distortion that's tuned correctly. Any effects unit should be able to get that sound.

ZZ Top... is complicated. Which era? Cause Billy is all over the place with his tone. Kevin and I have talked about this in the past. Gibbons likes a bluesier kind of crunch to a nastier hard edge. He's been known to mess with fuzz boxes from time to time. He's also been known to plug directly into a mixing console and lay down tracks that way. Which song do you think of when you think of ZZ Top? What tone from which song?

For now, when I'm after a specific tone (that I can't really get with the 2 tube amps) I just use the Katana. All the boss effects are there. Can usually get "close enough" especially with my limited ability. So far I'm a much better guitar and sound tech than player. All my friends bring me their stuff to work on. Haha

When I want to sit down and practice, I don't plug my guitar into anything. If I do, 10 hours will go by with me just dicking around with pedals and knobs and such. I've been doing it for decades.

ZZ Top... is complicated. Which era? Cause Billy is all over the place with his tone. Kevin and I have talked about this in the past. Gibbons likes a bluesier kind of crunch to a nastier hard edge. He's been known to mess with fuzz boxes from time to time. Which song do you think of when you think of ZZ Top? What tone from which song?

La Grange, was playing that tonight, fucking love that tone he has there!

Well, thanks for complicating things more guys  I'll do some research and watch some demos :ok: Kev, nothing wrong with dropping £2k+ on a good Gibby, those things tend to go up in value over the years so it's a good investment  My neighbours current #1 is an anniversary model Gibby Les Paul, cost him near £3k a few years back  He reckons he'd get £5k for it right now!

I had a Gibson LP Special when i was younger, and an SG at one point......... neither had great necks tbh, and the SG was a replacement for a US strat that i wished i'd never sold so when i was playing the SG i was constantly wishing i still had my strat  Guess all guitarists have those regrets!

La Grange is a '69 Marshall Superlead Plexi and a Strat. Nothing else. High volume and bass, low treble and mids. Presence a bit up.

If your effects unit has amp modeling capabilities, you should be able to come pretty close to it.

I would recommend something like a pod that has a crapton of effects on it instead of buying a million individual pedals.

Like this - https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/guitar-pedals/multi-fx-units/line-6-pocket-pod

I have an older model Zoom multi-effects pedal (probably made in mid 90s) and i always felt it sounded a bit "fake" compared to a pedal-board of analogue boxes.......... i guess tech has moved on a fair bit in the last 25 years though

 right? the individual tones arent quite all that - so one of the things I've got is a pod studio ux2, one of the things you can do there is set it up to send one (model) amp out one side and another amp out the other, and that's the best way to get a good sound with one. iirc Korg had the better distortion.

that said, I have a pedal for my distortion, because none of those fkn boxes will really do it for me. you can come close, but....I'm sort of a purist and imo its impossible to get really good heavy distortion from a multi or single pedal. the *only* reason I fell in love with the Blackstar HT Dual was that its got a real tube stage and that allowed me to put the best heavy preamp tube ever made in there, the mid 1950s Tung Sol 12AX7 with the double D getters. the HT dual was so-so until I put that tube in there, the distortion was only as good as the tube I put in there.

but that's another reason I love tube amps, because the tubes are a whole nother dimension of sound on top of your circuitry in the amp. the right tubes turns mediocre into magnificent. one other area that tubes excel over multi effects/pedals is when you go to those performance level volumes, the breakup of a tube goes on gracefully ever better whereas a pod through a solid state amp just isnt going to be as thick and juicy. you get ~60% of the way there by putting a pod into a tube power amp.

Hughes & Ketterner makes a great line of smaller tube amps, now that I think of it...

I'm gonna hold my tongue here, because I'm a hopeless pedal junkie with a fuck ton of pedals. If you can get a multi-effects unit that has everything and does it reasonably well, then go that route. It'll save you a ton of cash.

dont bite your tongue, your opinion is well valued here brotha. my recommending the multi pedal was exactly your latter reasoning!

you dont have any issues with a million pedals sucking up tone?

for bass I'm still using my ADA MB-1  I just put the blackstar in there so I can have true searing distortion, because the MB-1 circuitry doesnt give it even with that tung sol in there

Got a new amp yesterday :)

For a while i'd been thinking about buying a low wattage valve amp since i cant really crank my 100w Laney amp at home  Guy that comes into my work often is a new guitarist, came into a bit of money a year or so ago and decided to treat himself to a couple of top-end guitars and various other gear as he'd always wanted to play. Fair play to him, 50 year old and he practices daily and takes lessons! He was in our place on monday doing a job for us and, as usual, we started talking guitars - i happened to mention i was looking at getting a 5w valve amp and it so happens he had a Blackstar HT5R that he was looking to get rid of - he brought it into the work yesterday still in original box and celophane, it genuinely looked brand new, even had the plug cover on and the footswitch was still boxed. Said he'd only used it a couple of times before buying a high-end Helix and running it through headphones to avoid annoying the neighbours

Got it home last night and decided within 5 mins id take it - £150 for a £400 amp in mint condition, cant argue at that :ok: Anyone want a 100w Laney?

replaced preamp tubes on my buddy's mesa dual rec, it was feeding back like crazy but with this particular weird hum of sorts. tossed tubes on the tester and a couple of them were emitting high pitched noises at pretty loud volumes just sitting there on the tester!

replaced the jacks on my other buddy's Randall (the one dimebag used in the cowboys days)....looked pretty nice all cleaned up!

There are AmazonBasics guitar pedals now. They're made by Nux. $25-$45.

I guess they're looking to make a little money off of the kids running paper routes, saving their allowances and such.

Bought my dad a guitar for christmas :ok:

When the lockdown kicked off over here in march, he decided to start learning guitar again (he was a drummer when he was younger, then laterly played bass in a covers band) and bought himself a shitty £50 strat-alike on amazon  Fair play to him, he practices pretty much every night, and i'm pretty proud of the progress he's made given he's had MS for 30 years!

So, given how impressed i've been with my own cheap Squier Tele, i ordered him a brand new Fender Squire Affinity Stratocaster :) Gotta be better than the lump of wood he's trying to play atm

Dad and i were jamming on Christmas day  He's not that good, but we managed a bit of 12-bar blues for a bit! Something i'll always cherish :D

I'd hate to be all spammy, but Neunaber is holding a New Year's giveaway (free pedals and other junk) and if I get somebody to enter via the link I'm posting below, I can get 12 entries for the referral. Anyway, I use their reverb pedal and it's pretty wicked, not Strymon or Eventide wicked, but just slightly less wicked. Their tri-chorus is pretty awesome too. Anyway, if you want to enter the giveaway (and give me 12 entries in the process), go ahead and click the link and do whatever. Thanks.

I need a fuzz in my life...off to youtube.

In my guitar playing philosophy, when it comes to Fuzz, initial roads lead to EHX. Further travels lead to Jim Dunlop. Beyond that, I'm looking at germanium transistors. I'm not a fan of the stutter, heavy bias sound, so if I can avoid that, I'm happy.

I wasn't a fan of fuzz at all until TPS did a vid at Mecaris' on the original Tone benders. Since then I've been lightly looking for a mark 1 clone under $200.

all you really need to do to make fuzz is put a 12AZ7 in your 12AX7 spot and turn down the treble :D

Its kinda like the inverse of why use a 12AY7 in the phase inverter position - just a bitta compression, without a compressor - you can drive the plates as much as you want but the voltage wont ever go high enough to overload the circuit....whereas the Z just goes into that "plate overload" pretty much right away

There's a couple in there that sounded pretty good to me. I may have to put them on the list.

Nuno returns! And with this guitar solo, Nuno just put every living guitar player, young and old, to absolute shame. All hail King Nuno.

Nuno is one hell of a guitar player, but I couldnt stand listening to Extreme so I never really heard a heck of a lot of his stuff. Cool solo.

Good interview with Rick here
