A 24-year-old high school teacher from Danbury, Connecticut, was arrested for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old male student after complaining to administrators that his girlfriend had been harassing her.
Kayla Mooney was a first-year science teacher at Danbury High School when police discovered she engaged in sexual contact with a male student last year and gave him alcohol, reports the Daily Mail. The male victim's girlfriend reportedly told administrators that the teacher had sexual relations with her boyfriend, who then admitted to administrators, and later police, that he and Mooney had sex twice off campus in a car and that she purchased vodka for him, according to ctpost.com. Mooney was placed on administrative leave in February, while investigators looked into the case.
The boy reportedly provided police with emails sent to him by Mooney and, after a seven-week investigation, Mooney was formally charged on March 31 with second-degree sexual assault and distributing alcohol to a minor, reports CBS New York.
Mooney has yet to comment on the incident, but Danbury superintendent Sal Pascarella issued the following statement last month: "We are all very disappointed that this has happened to one of our faculty members. Obviously, there is a whole process we have to go through with this investigation. At this point, these are allegations."
The teacher is scheduled to be arraigned on May 27.
If convicted, Mooney faces 10 years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender.
